Why does forest and tree genetic diversity matter?
When collecting our seeds, we choose a number of different naturally occurring trees. This ensures that our seeds, and the trees that we grow are genetically diverse. The genetic diversity of seeds and planting stock is crucial for the short and long-term resilience of restored forest landscapes. However, these genetic aspects are widely neglected during both planning and implementation of restoration.
Growing from seed rather than cuttings ensures wider genetic diversity. Trees grown from cuttings are genetically identical to the parent plant.(DOC)
Tree populations need genetic variation for survival, good growth and viability in the long term. It enhances resistance to acute and chronic stressors, such as pests and diseases, and the effects of climate change. It is also fundamental in forest restoration efforts to ensure that the trees planted today will become the healthy forests of tomorrow.
Revegetation success is usually measured using ecological traits, however, genetic diversity should also be considered as it can influence fitness, adaptive capacity and long-term viability of revegetation plantings and ecosystem functioning. Mixed seed sourcing contributes to higher genetic diversity in revegetation projects. Royal Society
What is ecosourcing?
Ecosourcing is collecting seeds close to where they are to be planted. It's an important part of a restoration project.
It means the plants will be suited to local conditions and more likely to survive. By using ecosourced native plants you will help maintain the area's unique local characteristics. Ecosourcing will avoid the risk of planting species which are not native to the local area and which could become invasive. (DOC)
We source our seeds from trees that grow in the area, including the Kaweka.
We would like to encourage you to plant trees from ecosourced seeds whenever possible.
If ecosourcing principles are not followed then natural plant distributions and gene pools are mixed together. Kānuka, for example, has often been planted from any source and yet kānuka was recently split into at least 8 species of Kunzea. The different species of kānuka, whose distribution was such that they never grew together, may now have been mixed up. This ‘genetic pollution’ can lead to hybridism and ultimately the loss of species.
The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network recommends following ecosourcing principles especially for plant species that show marked genetic variation between populations (such as mānuka, kānuka and kōwhai).
