Is there an alternative to spraying?
Glyphosate based weedkiller is a controversial product and many of us like to stay away from it where possible. Is there another way of controlling weeds and grass in a reforestation project?
Do I need to fence off the area to be planted?
Usually yes, and it's going to be one of the main contributors to the cost of your project. It's important to consider effective and affordable options. But most importantly, you need to get it right. You don't want your precious little native trees eaten by your neighbour's goat.
Plant protectors or rabbit repellent?
Rabbits will eat unprotected native trees. The best solution depends on the size of your project.

Spade or post hole borer?
There are some affordable petrol hole borers on the market.
Is it worth the investment?
Is there an advantage compared to digging with a spade?
What is best for the tree?
How far apart?
Trees grow big, but is it better to plant them close together so that they protect each other, or should they be further apart to have room to grow?
Should I trim the roots?
Most tree seedlings benefit from root trimming at the time of planting.
My advice: don't use the kitchen scissors to do it.
Does size matter?
Small seedlings recover faster from transplanting shock. Bigger seedlings are more resistant to wind and frost. How big is big enough? Is there even and ideal size?
Should I add a bit of fertilizer?
A little bit may help. Is it going to make a big difference? Probably not.
What can I plant on a steep slope?
Erosion control is one of the most important benefits of planting trees. Unproductive slopes are ideal areas for reforestation. North-facing slopes are hot and dry. South facing slopes are cold and dark. Most trees will do well once established, but many do much better than others if planted in the right place.
Dry site, no water. Can I still plant?
Water is a precious resource and many of us don't have enough to water trees. Some trees are better adapted to dry conditions than others.
Will the trees block the view?
Visualising how big a tree is going to be in five ears can be hard for the untrained eye.
Avoiding having to prune trees for the next 20 years could be wise.
